Asbestos Assessment and Testing in Canberra

In the ACT only a licensed asbestos assessor may identify asbestos, take samples, assess the risk, monitor the air, carry out clearance inspections and issue clearance certificates. The assessor licence covers more here than in other states or territories, and Access Canberra administers it on behalf of the WorkSafe ACT Commissioner.

What asbestos assessment and testing in Canberra actually involves

The role covers identifying the location, type and condition of asbestos, including by taking samples, plus advice on managing and controlling it, reporting, air monitoring and clearance inspections. If a home has a current asbestos assessment report, whoever engages someone to work there must tell them about the asbestos and give them a copy of the report.

Before you renovate

Because homes are not required to hold asbestos registers, WorkSafe ACT says a pre-refurbishment survey by a licensed asbestos assessor should be carried out to check whether asbestos is present. Removal and assessment are separate licences in the ACT: a removalist takes it out, an assessor tests, monitors and clears the job.
