The ACT cut free household asbestos disposal from 250 kg to 60 kg. What changed?

What ACT City Services says

ACT City Services' Recyclopaedia page on asbestos says the domestic free-of-charge asbestos disposal allowance has been reduced from 250 kg to 60 kg. Domestic loads of 0 to 60 kg are accepted at Mitchell and Mugga Lane Resource Management Centres and do not need a booking.

Loads of 60 to 250 kg need a booking with Remondis and are accepted at Mugga Lane only, where disposal fees apply.

What the fees are

The ACT Government's fees from 1 July 2026 are A$59.55 a load for a package load under 250 kg, and A$236.80 a tonne for 250 kg or more or a package larger than 80 cm x 80 cm, both GST inclusive. Disposals larger than 60 kg are by appointment only, and the fees are reviewed and updated on 1 July each year.

How it must be packed

Each package must be no larger than 600 mm x 600 mm x 200 mm and no heavier than 20 kg, double-wrapped and sealed in heavy-duty plastic, and a household load is limited to 3 packages or 60 kg. Asbestos never goes in a recycling, garden waste or general waste bin.

Who may do the removing

The ACT has no small-area exception: removal from any home is licensed work, and doing it yourself at a home that is not a workplace is a strict liability offence. A licensed removalist also carries the waste in an enclosed compartment, and the waste must not cross the ACT border without an authorisation.

What could change

The fees are reviewed every 1 July, and WorkSafe ACT's own disposal page still shows the older 250 kg line, so read ACT City Services' current page before you rely on any figure here.
